Dub techno should be one of the most useful genres a DJ owns. Long tracks, looping architecture, bass-forward mixes with space for extended blending: structurally, the genre was built for the patient recorded set, the kind where ideas get room to develop across an hour rather than a minute.
The problem with most contemporary dub techno is familiar to anyone who has tried to programme it. Atmospheric without being arresting. Long without being deliberate. The loop goes around and nothing changes. Compositional patience requires compositional momentum to sustain it, and most releases do not have it.
Uuuuuuuu does.
What Picture Brings That Others Miss
Natal Zaks spent the better part of a decade working under the Central alias — midtempo house on Regelbau, and an early Erika de Casier credit back in 2017. The move to dub techno under the Picture alias, through Short Span, reads as someone arriving at the form from outside its orthodoxy. That is an advantage. An outsider's lack of genre debt produces different results than reverence.
RA reviewer Bella Aquilina, writing in July 2026, described the record as “finding more spark and movement in the form than more or less anyone has in years.” It earned an RA Recommends designation. RA applies this mark to only a fraction of the records it reviews. A meaningful signal rather than a formality.
Uuuuuuuu runs seven tracks, titled with the same vowel-stretched logic as the album name: Quuuuuu, Ruuuuu, Miiiiiii, Leeeeeee, Peeeeeee, Ziiiiiiiii, Wooooooo. The naming is not arbitrary. The tracks sustain and resonate the way the titles suggest. Wooooooo is the club-facing anchor, dense and spatially charged, designed to draw a room inward. Miiiiiii goes the other direction, pulling in pastoral field recordings: texture that creates presence by opening space rather than filling it. Between those two poles sits most of the record’s dynamic range, what Aquilina describes as the movement “from claustrophobic techno to dubbier, ambient moments.”
That range is the structural point. A single-register dub techno record gives you one tool. This gives you several, arranged across a genuine arc.
Uuuuuuuu is Picture’s second Short Span release in 2026, following February’s Eeeeeeee. Two records in one year suggests a working creative relationship producing results, not a label experiment. Zaks has committed to this direction.
Where It Fits in a Recorded Set
Dub techno earns its place in a two-hour recorded set. Extended transitions do not expose technique. They reward it. The genre’s harmonic consistency and minimal percussion open long mixing windows, the kind that let gradual layering land as intention rather than accident. Four minutes moving from one track into another will carry in a recording.
Uuuuuuuu has specific placement logic. Wooooooo’s density makes it a late-set tool: after the peak, when the room has been built and you are drawing it inward toward something more focused. Miiiiiii’s field recordings and open space work differently, useful for early scene-setting before percussion arrives. The tracks that sit between those two registers function as internal transitions, dub techno that shifts between club and ambient without breaking the surface tension.
For DJs building patient, slow-developing sets that reward documentation as much as dancing, this material belongs in the record bag. If you are thinking through the architecture of that kind of mix, Actress’s *Radical Frame* from earlier in 2026 is a related lesson in what slow DJing can do.
Short Span
Short Span is approximately two years old, run by Matthew Kent, formerly connected to Blowing Up The Workshop. Sa Pa and Mammo came first; Mr YT and Bot1500 have since joined the label. Uuuuuuuu is the label’s highest-profile moment to date. The trajectory is consistent.
Aquilina ends on this: “Zaks’ restless take on dub techno is proof there’s still evolution inside the framework, and thrilling stuff still lies ahead.” The record is several months old. The genre’s most useful records hold their value. This is one to file, not forget.
