The Live tab has a destination most DJs never notice. Open the setup sheet. In the platform selector, next to Twitch and YouTube, there's one more: Record to Device. Choose it, and the full Live pipeline runs, camera preview included, but nothing streams anywhere. The recording saves to your Library. When everything is set, the button at the bottom says Start recording. Not Start streaming.
This is not the same as the Record tab. The Record tab captures USB audio only. Record to Device is the only way to record your DJ set as video on iPhone in Ohm.
What the recording contains
A Record to Device session produces two files: a clean camera video (MOV) and a USB audio recording (WAV). Ohm composes them together at playback time inside the video player.
The MOV is video-only. No audio is mixed into it. The track identification overlay you may have seen during broadcast sessions is also not burned in. The file is clean camera footage, nothing else. If you plan to edit the recording later, you get separate video and audio files, both unprocessed.
USB audio comes from whatever mixer is connected. The capture pipeline is the same one the Record tab uses, and the same one that runs during a Twitch or YouTube broadcast. Internal microphone input is available, but track identification requires USB input.
Track metadata does appear in the recording, but not in the file itself. When you watch it back in Ohm's Library player, a track card shows title, artist, artwork, label, key, BPM and genre each time the active track changes. The card is generated from the session's identification data at display time and auto-hides after six seconds. Nothing is encoded into the video file. Share or export the recording and the overlay stays behind.
Camera options depend on your iPhone model. Rear lens choices vary by device: wide, ultra-wide, telephoto lenses are discovered from the physical hardware, so the options you see will match what your phone has. The front camera is available through the flip control. The flip locks once a recording is in progress. Make your camera choice before you tap Start recording.
Device Audio Only
Inside Record to Device, the Capture selector offers two options: Audio + Video and Audio Only. Pick Audio Only and the app skips all camera setup. No camera permission prompt, no preview. The output is a WAV file, the same as you would get from the Record tab.
The meaningful difference is that the Live tab's identification pipeline is still active. Track metadata appears in the Library entry and in playback, the same as a full video session. For DJs who want the Library to include a full tracklist but do not need camera footage, Device Audio Only is the practical route.
When Record to Device makes sense
Three situations where it serves better than a standard audio recording:
Reviewing your own performance. Watching yourself DJ (transitions, energy, how you interact with the decks) requires footage. Device mode captures it without a live audience on the other end. Watch it back immediately in Ohm, or later on a TV via AirPlay.
Sets you are not ready to broadcast. First session on a new mixer, a rehearsal before a big gig, a trial run through a new room: these are moments where going live is not the right call. Record to Device gives you the full Live pipeline experience, including the countdown and session structure, with no commitment to a public stream.
Source footage for editing. Clean MOV, clean WAV. If you plan to edit the video later, add overlays, or export to another platform, both files are separate and unprocessed.
How to use it
The setup follows the same flow as a broadcast session. Everything is configured in the setup sheet before recording begins.
- Open the Live tab and tap Set up
- In the setup sheet, tap the Destination row and switch to Record to Device
- In the Capture row, pick Audio + Video or Audio Only
- If you chose Audio + Video: select your camera lens and video quality (720p or 1080p)
- Plug in your USB mixer
- Tap Start recording when ready
Before recording begins, Ohm counts down three seconds. Once the count starts, the configuration is locked. When you end the session, the recording saves to your Library.
Before you start:
- USB input is required for track identification. A session using the internal microphone will not generate a tracklist.
- Backgrounding the app pauses camera capture. Switch away from the app mid-session and the camera stops. The video file will have a gap for that period, though audio keeps recording. Live broadcasts have the same limitation.
- Audio and video sync in playback depends on iOS 18.2 or later. Earlier versions use a zero-offset alignment, which keeps the files together but does not guarantee frame-accurate sync.
Watching it back
After the session ends, the recording appears in your Library alongside audio-only sets. If camera footage was captured, a Watch video capsule appears in the recording overview. Tapping it opens the full-screen video player.
The player includes AirPlay for routing playback to a TV, Apple TV, or AirPlay-capable speaker, a waveform scrub bar, and track navigation between the session's cue points. Each time the active track changes, a card appears on screen with the track details. It stays up while the controls are hidden and fades out on its own after a few seconds.
If you have live-streamed a set with Ohm before, the playback experience is identical. The Library treats a Device mode recording and a broadcast session the same way.
The recording is accessible from your Library indefinitely. To share or export it, use the Audio + Video export option in the recording overview. The exported file is composed video and audio. The track card overlay is not included.
